LL C2W1D5: Farewell BFL Women

It’s rather like the end of a major chapter in my life.

When I began my return to fitness last May, one of the first things I did was join the the Body for Life Women group on MSN. At that time, the group was relatively new (under 20 members), having just split off from another BFL group for women that had gone kind of wonky with religious fervor and Weight Watchers’ style point counting and ice cream eating.

Anyhow, the BFL Women group I joined was started by Kyra, who ran the board and provided advice according to the rules set down by the original BFL book, not the more recent and forgiving versions laid out in Eating for Life or Body for Life for Women. I got my start with fitness journaling on that forum for a full 12 week challenge before I made the leap to my own blog, so in many ways the group was my first fitness home.

As I continued with my experiments in fitness and diet, I drifted away from the group because I could no longer post my daily menu and workouts there without confusing the newbies who had just started their own transformations. There were times when the only thing my regimen had in common with BFL was the fact that I still ate 6 meals a day. ;)

Now the board’s days are numbered. While the membership has grown to over 500 members in just over a year, the number of active posters has dwindled considerably in the past few months. Within a week the board will be deleted along with all of the posts, both good and bad, that have accumulated there. There are many recipes that will disappear. There are nearly 12 weeks’ worth of accountability posts by yours truly written during my very first fitness challenge last summer which cannot be archived or even easily searched for due to MSN Group’s truly lame design.

Even though I haven’t been a regular on the board for many months now, I am sad to see it go.

Thank goodness there will be something to replace it soon. Kyra kicked around the idea of starting a new, non-BFL specific group for women who are serious about making fitness part of their lives for the long haul. I nagged and wheedled until she agreed to start it up somewhere besides MSN Groups and took on the task of setting things up with a proper content management system script and a shiny new domain.

I’ll let you all know when the new site is ready to be unveiled. Wait until you see the new name…
